The M4 iPad Pro seems built to be an alternative everything unit to the Macbook.

Yes, its even more exciting than theVision Pro.

But why, you ask?
What, just because its smaller and lighter than the Pro from two years ago?
The big reason why is the new, pretty OLED screen.
The company has said in its press materials that the new iPad Pro has desktop-class apps.
During the launch event, Apple talked about its new Magic Keyboard being just like using a MacBook.
Instagram and other Meta apps have long been utter crap on iPad.
Theres still just one USB-C port that makes connecting accessories or docs harder than it needs to be.
With all the accessories, this is the closest well probably ever get to an Apple 2-in-1.
Its too bad the iPad Pro wont be your laptop replacement.
The previous pro screen looks less well-defined and more gray overall.
Apple claimed the new Pro would get 1000 nits of SDR brightness and 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness.
At full screen, the brightness was just under 500 nits.
Does it look better than other non-Apple OLEDs?
Your grubby hands will inevitably mar the surface as a touchscreen and disrupt the viewing experience.
That doesnt change with the iPad Pro 2024.
It does an alright job of avoiding glare from nearby lights, but not enough.
it’s possible for you to use the rig under spotlights.
Is that to say its not a powerful chip?
Absolutely not, especially for the scale of the iPad.
However, it feels more like a branching path of the M3 than real new hardware.
The neural engine, or NPU, is supposed to handle AI tasks.
On paper, thats slightly less than whats been proposed byQualcomms Snapdragon X Elite, a fellow ARM-based CPU.
In practice, you really wont notice the AI capabilities on the new tablet, at least not yet.
However, the CPU and GPU capabilities of the M4 definitely pushed the new iPad up in power.
It was far better on web client benchmarks as well.
On the 6th-gen iPad Pro, it took 1 minute and 53 seconds.
There arent many ways to compare Apples to Apples from a tablet ecosystem to a full-fledged Mac.
For one, the iPad doesnt have an easy, established way of tracking framerates in games.
All ran with a relatively solid performance on the default low-to-mid controls.
The iPad version has no graphics options, but the two look identical across the older and new tablets.
Your best bet for gaming on an iPad is to hook up a third-party Bluetooth controller.
By itself, it weighs 1.7 pounds less than the MacBook Air 13.
Attached to the new Magic Keyboard, it weighs just about the same as Apples lightest laptop design.
The aluminum palm rest and larger trackpad are both great additions.
Still, those who stick with Apples products wont miss out on much save for perhaps a detachable keyboard.
Everything you already used your iPad for is here again in apps like Freeform or Notes.
The same thing happens with some mobile games like Netflixs and Supergiants Hades.
Passive entertainment is fine, but the iPad is still the iPad.
Some apps have the same capabilities as their PC counterparts, but some dont.
Doing something as simple as right-clicking on a link to open a new tab in Chrome isnt available.
Neither is the right-click prompt for pasting and formatting on Google Docs.
As we mentioned, Meta apps like Instagram still dont play well on iPads.
You should be looking at the iPad if youre into 3D modeling in some app like ZBrush.
I liked the new $129 Apple Pencil Pro with its squeeze function and barrel roll feature.
I also wouldnt regret that time spent either.
If only I could say the same for some of my most-used apps, like Google Drive and Docs.
Again, the issue comes down to usability.
Its not as simple as moving your windows from one screen to another.
Anybody with Mac experience will immediately feel cramped and restricted on iPad.
That was about seven hours before I needed to charge, which was with excessive use.
During more regular use, I found the battery would go about eight hours before needing a charge.
This is by regularly taking it out during the day and putting it away when on the go.
And youll necessarily drain less battery with basic video playback than with more active apps.
It wont beat the MacBook Air on battery life.
As for the camera, it really isnt something to get excited about.
It wont look professional quality compared to theiPhone 14or15 Pro.
The rear sensor array also includes a LiDAR Scanner, flash, and Microphone.
The 13-inch version I used was easily the best tablet Apple has produced so far.
But its still not all there.
This thing wants to go places, but software lets it down.
