Night Swim is, undoubtedly,a film about a killer pool.
Beyond that though, its hard to pinpoint what exactly the movie wants to be.
Its not quite scary, but it can be kind of tense.

Its not cheesy,but its also kind of funny.
Its sometimes smart, but also maddingly dumb.
And even when things start to get interesting, something holds it back.

Ray needs it to help nurse an injury that may have ruined his baseball career.
Eves dad was in the Navy, so shes an expert diver.
Which, instantly, feels like its trying way too hard.

Couldnt it just be hot where they live?
Does anyone really get up at 3 a.m. and think Yeah, nows a good time for a swim?
Makes zero sense, but sure.
We go with it.
Eventually though, that does happen.
Not all of it makes sense but, again, you kind of just have to go with it.
are exclaimed with gleeful gusto, its like a release value of the awkwardness.
Because all of the action takes place in the pool, there isnt much room for surprise.
For 95% of the movie, either the evil is in the pool or there isnt any evil.
But that doesnt mean every single potentially scary moment isnt overly telegraphed to a fault.
And if all of this sounds a bit manic and random its because thats what Night Swim is.
