Youve got questions and Wes Ball has answers.
We asked Ball why he chose to start there.
It was the earliest decision for me, he said.
Let’s talk Apes spoilers.Image: Fox
Actually it was the first thing I ever storyboarded.
Early on I put music to it.
I cut it together.
Freya Allan as Mae.Image: Fox
Before I had a script, I did that.
It just felt right.
It felt like, Lets remind people.

Seven years have passed.
Some people dont even remember he died, Caesar.
So it just felt right.
There were still too many people who just werent as fanatical about those previous movies.
So that helped us to be like, Okay, okay.
And then for the real fans that love it: snap, Caesars face.
I think its a great first cut, you know what I mean?
That was the goal.
Well, its been spoiled now but hopefully that remains for some people, he said.
Thats kind of the dimension of the movie, I think, he said.
Shes this little enigma that we get to unwrap over the course of the movie.
And we knew we were going to start with an ape story this time.
Were going to start there.
And of course, we meet a feral human and its like, perfect.
Then we get to do the reverse, you know?
And literally a door opens at the end of the movie that shows that there is more to come.
There is more behind this character and the relationship that theyve had, the adventure theyve had together.
How theyre going to navigate their respective worlds.
I think its just full of interesting possibilities.
Those other humans
So, does Ball know what the other humans are up to?
Does it even matter since this is a story about apes?
Weve certainly got ideas, Ball said.
We talk about it while were making this thing.
We very carefully talked about Noa and Mae as a character.
Weve got plenty of runway to go before that movie, but its exciting.
The core of these movies is about apes and humans.
They stand in for us as humans being able to exist with others that we are different than.
Thats what its all about.
More to come?
The ending isnt really an ending as opposed to a pause.
So, we asked Ball about that decision.
Its an important franchise for the studio, Ball said.
Itd be naive to think its just one.
I think we went into it trying to ensure it was a fulfilling one-story.
That was the idea.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now in theaters.
